The Policing Pledge

Policing Pledge

Loving the latest Policing Pledge adverts. Touchy feely stuff.

In the one on the left 3 yobs trash the words ‘THE POLICING PLEDGE’ then you hear an “oi”, so just like in real life they run off.

Then a PC knocks on what’s meant to be a local residents door, supposedly goes in to take a statement, then leaves – taking the time to adjust the damaged letters on his way.

This got me so excited that I looked up the Pledge itself. Tension mounted as I scanned through for words like ‘prosecute’, ‘arrest’ and  ‘jail’ but I was disappointed to find none of these.

In fact all it is is a PR exercise about response times, community and other vague intangible goals. I especially liked the disclaimer at the end:

WE WANT TO DO OUR BEST FOR YOU BUT IF WE FAIL TO MEET OUR PLEDGE WE WILL ALWAYS EXPLAIN WHY IT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE ON THAT OCCASION TO DELIVER THE HIGH STANDARDS TO WHICH WE ASPIRE AND YOU DESERVE.

In other words not only are we not promising to catch and prosecute criminals but we might not even manage to get there on time… but we’ll say sorry.

I want to see a pledge that says we will investigate all crimes, no matter how small and make sure the culprits are banged up ASAP.

Aaaaargh!
